Herman Chalupsky
Principal Property Practitioner
Herman Chalupsky is a world champion surf-ski paddler with a staggering range of sporting titles to his credit. He has competed on average in three international canoe races every year since he was 18 years-old.

Herman has been in the property industry for over 20 years, all of them in Durban, working the north, south, central and western areas as a broker before establishing his own agency. He says success in business is down to hard work. "The harder you work the luckier you get. This applies in both business and sport."

Herman is renowned in the commercial and industry property industry for the customer loyalty he has engendered. He is available 24/7 and is willing to deal with work issues head-on. His relaxed, friendly disposition belies a steely determination. "I've been through property cycles. It's either feast or famine. How you handle the tough times determines what type of agent you are going to be."

There aren't many bodies of water that Herman has not paddled. Herman has paddled in Spanish rivers, off the Irish, Japanese and Australian coasts, around Manhattan, Tahiti, and France, and then up, down and around South Africa. He has won 23 SA Surf-lifesaving titles, was six times winner of the SA Iron Man title, has taken gold (sometimes twice) in events like the Molokai Ski Race, the World Sea Kayak Champs, the Berg River Marathon, the World Surf Ski Champs, and the New York Canoe Marathon. He was a Springbok surf-lifesaver and canoeist and was SA Army Sportsman of the year in 1983; Natal University Sportsman of the year in 1984 and Natal Technikon Sportsman of the year in 1985.

Herman says Chalupsky Properties is unique in that every agent handles a separate area. "We have specialists in each area, with excellent knowledge of properties and landlords. We have a good rapport with landlords and at any given time we have about 500 active properties on our books. "We have an intimate knowledge of these so clients don't have to go from agency to agency. Our expertise is under one roof."

Herman is married to Michaela and they have one daughter, Ella.

Trevor Martin
Non-Principal Property Practitioner
Seasoned commercial property broker Trevor Martin has a wide smile, a generous disposition and a sharp eye for a good building.
And he has an encyclopedic knowledge of Durban's commercial buildings and landlords.

A 48-year-old graduate with a higher diploma in marketing management from the erstwhile Technikon Natal, Trevor has been in the property business for 20 years.

In that time, he was a partner at Chalupsky Properties for fifteen years before taking up a management position at JHI Properties for two years and then spent two and half years at Deal Core Property Group before returning to his roots and home at Chalupsky Properties in early 2021.

In the years he has spent in the property industry he has attained all the state required certification and training in real estate and has amassed a truckload of skills negotiating big property sales and leases with entrepreneurs and company listed on the stock exchange.

But, most importantly, he knows key business nodes around Durban like the back of his hand. He has successfully placed hundreds of firms in properties from Jacobs in the South to Dube Trade Port in the North.

"I have a keen eye for the heart of businesses. Good companies must be efficient. The right property is critical to that, so I always keep that in mind. You have to pay attention in any business, but especially in commercial real estate. Listening carefully is everything.

"Businesses concentrate on their key strengths, so they need a broker with the expertise to help them anticipate growth and location in relation to that growth. Moving is disruptive and costly so when you do it, best make sure you chose strategically."

In an era beset by data, Trevor says the commercial real estate business is changing, but not so that online or technical wizardry can change it.

"Brokers can't rely on simply having stock. You must have deep knowledge of businesses and trusted connections. That trumps anything."
